I like to observe you when you're engaged with your friends—if you don't know I'm looking, that is. I like to see how you interact with them. Sometimes you'll let your hair down and act goofy. It's fun seeing that side of you—as long as you don't get too crazy. No teen likes to see her mom acting out of control. That's unnerving, to say the least.

At times, I can tell when your feelings are hurt or you're feeling insecure. I actually feel empathy for you because you remind me of me, and I'm reminded that it might not be that easy being a grownup. It makes me want to hear what's going on with you and your friends, but not as your confidante. I don't think I could handle that. I have enough friends to keep me busy for now.

It's encouraging when I see that you have good friends and strong relationships. Whether you know it or not, I sometimes make mental notes on ways you interact with your closest friends. I may never admit it, but I probably do try to imitate you. I just do it in my own way.
